Budgeting and forecasting is a very important process for companies and other types of organizations, but it can be challenging to create credible forecasts, particularly forecasts that can withstand deeper scrutiny by a person with detailed questions. A good forecast is often a prerequisite for other important tasks, such as budgeting, obtaining financing, preparing business plans, and setting goals for an organization.
For example, a small business owner will typically need to provide forecasts to their bank as part of a business loan application, and a new manager with limited previous exposure to accounting and finance concepts may suddenly be faced with the responsibility of preparing budgets for their department. Good budgeting and forecasting skills can be the difference between the business owner being approved or declined for their business loan application, or the manager succeeding or failing in their new role.
